1949
Foundation
as ‘Gerhard Winkler und Co. Taschenfabrik’ in a garage in Hamburg. This laid the foundation for ‘ travelite ’ and marked the beginning of a success story that continues to this day.
1978
travelite
The Gerhard Winkler and Co. Luggage Factory changes its name and is henceforth officially known as travelite – like travel and light. The name says it all. After all, when it comes to lightweight luggage, we often enjoy our position as pioneers.
2007
Hamburg
We’re moving into our new Hamburg headquarters on Merkurring. There, our staff work every day with passion and dedication. And not because they have to, but simply because they enjoy getting involved. That’s exactly what our team is like.

Sustainability is more than just a word
Even though we are still a long way from reaching our goal, we are taking sustainable steps towards the future. For us, sustainability means treating nature and our fellow human beings responsibly, fairly and mindfully. We want to play an active role in helping to ensure that the future we all share remains worth living. Even though we are only a small part of the bigger picture, we nevertheless see it as our duty to constantly improve. Step by step. Every day.
Among the initiatives aimed at reducing our corporate CO₂ emissions is, for example, our increasing focus on developing products made entirely or at least partly from fabric or granules derived from recycled plastic waste, such as PET bottles or production waste from our own manufacturing processes.
We are also constantly working to reduce packaging waste by nesting products inside one another to optimise volume for dispatch and by using recycled cardboard. We keep single-use protective packaging to a minimum and now use protective film packaging made from post-consumer recycled waste almost without exception. Such film packaging does not introduce any new plastic waste into the cycle. Furthermore, these films can be recycled for reuse within existing European recycling systems with virtually no loss of quality.
For us, however, sustainability also means manufacturing products with a long service life. We therefore not only set stringent physical and chemical specifications for our materials, raw materials and components, but also ensure that parts subject to particularly high wear and tear (such as wheels, telescopic handles, locks and handles) on travelite luggage are replaceable wherever technically possible.
